After completed my Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering (with Distinction) from Hong Kong Polytechnic and being the top student in the class, I was arranged, under the Hong Kong Government's Engineer Training Scheme to be sent to the Yorkshire Switchgear Engineering Company in the UK. While training with Yorkshire Switchgear, I studied at Leeds Polytechnic on a part time basis preparing for the professional examination set by the UK Council of Engineering Institutions and obtained the Leeds Polytechnic Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (with Distinctions). One year later (1975), I successfully completed the UK Council of Engineering Institutions examination.

After completing my two year engineering training with Yorkshire Switchgear, I was fortunate enough to be accepted by the City University in London to study Master of Administration under a special entry scheme supported, at that time, by the UK government to encourage professional engineers without Bachelor Degrees to study management. After I completed a Master Degree in Administration Sciences (Thesis title: London Transport Maintenance), I went back to Yorkshire Switchgear to gain further experience on High Voltage Engineering. While working, I studied part time for the Cost and Management Profession Examinations. In 1979, I was sent by the company to Singapore to set up its first offshore operation. Due to a heavy work load, I was not able to complete my ICMA qualification. In 1982, I obtained the title of "Chartered Engineer" by virtue of my academic qualification, professional training and experience. In 1984, I was asked by Yorkshire Switchgear to come to Australia to set up an assembly plant in Melbourne. Two years later, triggered by the company's re-structuring in UK, I decided to leave the Industrial world and join Monash University in pursuit of my Ph.D. qualification. After three years research in project management scheduling, I was awarded Doctor of Philosophy. My thesis title was" Resource Constrained Project Management". With that, I switched my career from Engineering to Computing. In 1993, I obtained full membership of the Australian Computer Society.
